Breaking News: A trend that must end now

In the past week I have seen photos of Sarkozy shirtless and in his swimming suit, and (the horror) Putin shirtless and fishing, or hunting for humans, or whatever it is he does for fun while on vacation.

It is a small mercy indeed that these two bozos have at least made an effort to be in good shape (for guys their ages) but this horrific shirtless world leader movement must be stopped now. At all costs. The world must band together to halt this trend before Stephen Harper decides to flash the world his man boobs.

That pic of Putin made me feel somewhat ill. Your Mr Harper has been invited to address our Parliament when he's out here for APEC next month - at least we can guarantee that will be a shirts on affair!!!!!

Now here's my problem...and this might not come across well, but I will try...I am not saying that this shirtless sight is a pretty one; however, our whole society has become so image and body conscious to the point where people won't wear a bathing suit in public if they don't have a perfect body...and this all results from the fact that we are constantly bombarded with beautiful bodies only...those without, then develop a variety of complexes (including eating disorders)...but what really irks me is when people with less-than-perfect bodies start complaining about seeing other less-than-perfect bodies. If these people are comfortable with their weight, then it shouldn't be anyone else's problem (providing of course that they aren't showing off their overweight topless bodies in a shopping mall or a grocery store---topless bodies should only be in places where topless bodies are acceptable, such as beaches, waterparks, etc.) The more we are exposed to the image of regular everyday bodies, the more people won't be so self-conscious of their own...if that day does come, that does not mean people should have carte blanche to gain weight. There is still the health issue to think about.

I somewhat agree with you. But do you actually know anybody who won't wear a bathing suit because they aren't perfect? I can only think of one friend like that. And frankly I would be thrilled to be as "out of shape" as she thinks she is. That's just her self-image problem. I don't have a perfect body and that doesn't stop me from enjoying the beach. And that goes for everyone else I know.

But my point here is that these guys are world leaders. Sure, they can swim and fish and do whatever they want on vacation. But don't invite the press to snap pictures of them in their private lives and then print a whole feature in Der Spiegel! Have some freakin' dignity, Putin!

I actually know a couple of people who won't wear a bathing suit (or at least not without a t-shirt on), so I am sure it is more common than we would believe.

Me, personally, I dislike my body, but it won't prevent me from wearing a bathing suit (of course, it all depends where and with who)...there are situations where I won't be seen wearing one...and then there are situations where I'll even take it off (but that's another story, I guess)
