When your house is a one-holer like mine, is there anything more stressful than a malfunctioning toilet? On a weekend? During the peak vacation season?
I'm not much of a plumber and most of my testing involves flushing the toilet and then staring at the rising water level and praying like crazy that it doesn't overflow. I did this a good dozen times throughout the day. I also used the plunger once, to no noticeable benefit. And bailed the water out once, also didn't seem to do any good. I have no idea what blocked it and caused it to run so sluggishly and have the water level rise so hair-raisingly high, but on last flush it seems to have righted itself. Water level was back to normal.
Life is just one irritant after another.

One-holer? I presume that means just the one loo? At least you didn't have to pay for a plumber on a weekend - they just love those weekend callouts.....maybe the plunger did the job eventually?
I remember north american toilets - there's a lot of water in the bowl - weird.
When the water dares to go too high, just take off the back of reservoir and pull the little handle with the floater jiggermabob - it'll stop filling the toilet and give you a moment to try to figure out how to get yourself out of this mess (the water will drain eventually or you'll simply stay there until some friendly neighbour drops by to help - not!)
N. =)
think: it's like when you get home from camping and really, really appreciate every modern, easy flush
good luck
