A little bit of Michael Ware is good for the soul

Wolf Blitzer: "The president flatly said today the United States is winning. . . .From your point of view, does it look like the U.S. is winning right now?"

Michael Ware: "The president's remarks are absolutely striking, Wolf. I mean I would very much like to ask President Bush how he defines winning, because on the ground here, it looks like anything but. Given the state of chaos, given the near civil war, given the rising tempo of the Sunni insurgency, given the increasing influence, as Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad pointed out, of Iran and, to a lesser degree, Syria, I would like to know how the president defines victory."

I look forward to the day when Ware finally completely loses it and says: "Wolf, Bush is a delusional nut job." Should be any day now...

This may sound like a strange question, but do you think an American reporter could get away with saying that stuff? (I'm glad he's saying it though).

I don't think so. If they could, there would be at least one American reporter doing it.

A good example is David Gregory on NBC. When you see him at Bush's press conferences, he asks pointed, tough questions, but when he does his reports, they don't reflect the questioning at all. His stories clearly get "tidied-up" by his editors. Too bad.

A little bit of Michael is always good.
But no, I don't think an American reporter would have the balls to ask those questions, or to directly refute something that Bush has said. For example, there was a military exercise that Bush gave credit to the Iraqis for carrying out with little to no American help. Ware was there, embedded with the American unit involved and he said something to the effect of "I'm not going to call Buch a liar, but I was there and that's not what happened".
I've not seen David Gregory, so maybe I shouldn't say that...

Did you happen to catch Rummy's press conference? "No one can predict the future, so just back off" WTH?

I read about Rummy's comments. It's funny 'cause he hasn't changed at all, he was always an asshole, but the media have turned on him (smelling a dead scapegoat, perhaps) so all his arrogance isn't nearly as amusing as it was 3 years ago. Why doesn't he want to retire?

Because he's arrogant enough to think he's still right?

And speaking of reporters, I saw Jane Arraf asking a question at a news conference in Bagdhad the other day - now she's with NBC.
