In Opera News

Given this site's unofficial status as an opera blog, I guess I have to comment on the death of Luciano Pavarotti.

I liked him. I thought he had a nice voice and was entertaining. But sometimes he looked a mess, and I just wanted to get him scrubbed up clean and have a decent haircut.

some opera blog...you failed to comment on the death of Beverly Sills less than two months ago*...I was going to raise the issue at the time, but then it slipped my mind.

as for Pavarotti, I have to admit, (especially when you listen to some of his recordings) that he had a very distinctive and clear voice that could actually cause goose pimples...however, as an entire package, he is not my favorite tenor. I have a penchant for Alfredo Kraus, personally. Domingo is extremely talented and probably the best tenor stage actor (Pavarotti very rarely could pull off the suave tenor roles with credibility...notably the role of Romeo) I also like Jose Carreras (the lesser known of the 3 tenors), he always had the look and shape that went with tenor roles (as did Alfredo Kraus) Then there was the sultry Franco Corelli (but he's from an earlier period and so I only really know him from recordings; have never actually seen him on televised or DVD performances, although I'm sure he appeared on Ed Sullivan at some point.) And then of course, there was Fritz Wunderlich (sp?), but he died at an early age (he might even have fallen down stairs à la Arbuckle)

In any case, a big standing ovation for Pavarotti, he deserves it.
