At the risk of stating the obvious, I have to say that one thing I consistently love about Stephin Merritt is his unshakeable belief that every minor romantic malaise or major heartbreak can be soothed by booze.

Are you trying to suggest that it isn't? Because if I'm honest, every romantic heartbreak I've ever had is at least soothed by a brief application of liberal amounts of alcohol. It's the only way your friends can stand the roller coaster ride...sheer entertainment provided when a mostly light drinker thinks to tie one on.
Oh, you are a light drinker, too? Apparently, I am a very amusing drunk on the rare occasions I go out of control.
