The gigantor A380 landed in Montreal yesterday. I saw it on the news. I did not attend the festivities. I was not among the 1,000 people who went to the airport to see the plane.
When the plane landed, everyone huddled near the runway was jumping around and applauding. Am I missing something, or is it just plain weird to cheer for a big jet airliner?

rubes!
(that's something we hayseeds in the west would pill...)
...not unless said plane is full of drunk Quebec passengers landing in a sunny vacation destination down south...in which case, I believe they are obligated to applaud before getting off the plane. At least, that's the only reason I can think of them for applauding. As far as I'm concerned a hearty "Yay! We're here!" would suffice.

sorry, Miss Editor "...the only reason I can think of for them applauding."...and even then, this sentence still sounds awkward.

I don't think people applaud anymore. At least I hope not. It makes me think that they all got on the plane assuming it would crash and they are saying "yay, we're alive. We didn't die in a fiery crash after all". It's creepy.
Update: The A380 that landed in Montreal did NOT appear to have any beds in it. What's the point then? Isn't the whole point of the 380 that you get a bed? Dumb airplane.
beds?!
was your friend/fiend ralph/rafe on that plane?
Rafe doesn't need a bed. He does perfectly okay in the airplane toilet.
He's been quiet these days. No scandals. He must be working.
There are only beds in first class I believe - i know this because the A380 has already been here weeks ago! (you Canadians, so far behind!) and I believe one is already flying the Singapore/Sydney route.
Big ol' jet air liner...don't take me too far away...oohhhhh
